RENFORTH

Just five minutes from my parents' house, the river comes alive with bright ice shacks, community spirit, and the beauty of taking the long way home.

No matter the season, this place holds a special spot in my heart.

The Ice Shacks of the Kennebecasis River

Rothesay, NB

Winter in Canada is more than just snow—it’s a season of tradition, movement, and community. Nowhere is this more evident than on the frozen Kennebecasis River in Rothesay, where rows of colourful ice shacks create a striking winter village. These simple structures, scattered across the ice, are more than shelters for fishing; they’re gathering places where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the rhythm of winter life unfolds. The frozen river becomes a connection hub, from families huddled over fishing lines to spontaneous hockey games and skaters gliding past. We often question if Canada has a distinct culture, but this is proof that we do—woven into the cold, the camaraderie, and how we turn winter into something vibrant and uniquely ours.
